“Every time we walk along a beach some ancient urge disturbs us so that we find ourselves shedding shoes and garments or scavenging among seaweed and whitened timbers…”
— Loren Eiseley, The Unexpected Universe
Seaweed is one of the most versatile and nutrient-rich foods on the planet. A sustainable and eco-friendly food source, it has been used for centuries in traditional medicine and cuisine, and recent studies have shown that it can provide a range of health benefits, from boosting the immune system to aiding in weight loss.
But seaweed’s benefits go beyond just our bodies – it plays a crucial role in the health of our oceans and planet. Seaweeds are part of the “blue carbon” ecosystem, absorbing carbon dioxide and converting it into carbon and oxygen, sequestering the carbon in its tissues and releasing the oxygen into the atmosphere.
With more than 70% of the earth’s surface covered by ocean water but more than 95% of non-animal food produced on land, a growing understanding of seaweed and what it has to offer has the potential to mitigate climate change, promote ocean health, and support local communities.
Our goal at Savory Seaweed is to share the wonders of these amazing and diverse organisms with the world.
